School Mental Health ASSIST
As part of Ontario’s Comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, School Mental Health ASSIST is a provincial team designed to help Ontario school boards to build capacity to support student mental health and well-being. This is through effective implementation of research based programs and strategies. The key focus areas for School Mental Health ASSIST are:
- Organizational conditions and leadership for effective school mental health
- Capacity-building for education professionals
- Implementation support for school mental health promotion and prevention programming
All school boards have received funding to support a Mental Health Leader, who is tasked with creating and enacting a Board Mental Health Strategy, coordinating educator capacity-building initiatives, and implementing appropriate research-based programs and strategies. To assist them in these tasks, the provincial School Mental Health ASSIST team provides a suite of resources designed to facilitate organizational capacity, mental health literacy, and effective selection and implementation of programming. These resources include:
- Leadership modules to support Mental Health Leaders and senior administrators
- Ongoing board-specific implementation coaching support
- Decision-making tools and templates (e.g., Board Mental Health Strategy Template, Resource Mapping Toolkit)
- Resources that boards can use to support educator mental health awareness and literacy
- Resources to support professional learning for school mental health staff
- SMH ASSIST presentations and workshops
