Math Strategies - Primary

Math Strategies – Primary computer software is suitable for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students in order to explore various mathematical principles, including Number Sense and Numeration, and Patterning and Algebra. With its interactive and dynamic interface and animated chipmunk character, Math Strategies – Primary makes learning mathematics fun! Students are given the opportunity to discover strategies to count, add, subtract, multiply, and divide by engaging in exciting mathematical activities.

 What function does Math Strategies - Primary provide?
  • provides students with opportunities to develop an understanding and ability to apply the principles and strategies for counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through guided exploration;
  • engages students by using interactive and animated characters;
  • provides access to learning tools (e.g., number lines, ten-frames)
  • provides access to teaching resources (e.g., flash cards, worksheets);
  • provides teachers with reports to assess students' understanding of mathematical principles and strategies;
  • provides Do and Apply (concrete or symbolic) options to solve mathematical problems; and
  • strengthens basic mathematical skills and develops mathematical thinking.

 How can students use Math Strategies – Primary to encourage mathematical thinking?

Math Strategies – Primary provides students with the opportunity to learn independently and improve their mathematical thinking skills, while solving mathematical situations

Math Strategies – Primary is divided into four sections:

  1. Counting and Quantity
  2. SingleDigit Addition and Subtraction
  3. Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction
  4. Single-Digit Multiplication and Division

Each of the four sections supports students in learning the principles of and strategies for counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each activity uses a consistent framework … learn, do and apply.

  1. Learn: the chipmunk models a principle or strategy within the context of a mathematical situation.
  2. Do: the chipmunk provides feedback and support as students explore the principle or practise the strategy.
  3. Apply: the chipmunk provides feedback as students apply the principle or strategy. This allows students to test their level of understanding and whether they are comfortable with the newly learned principle or strategy.

The activities in Math Strategies – Primary expose students to thinking about number and the variety of strategies for working with numbers operationally.

 How is Math Strategies– Primary useful to teachers in the classroom?

Due to the simplicity of the graphic user interface and how easy Math Strategies – Primary is to use, students are able to engage in their work more independently, allowing teachers to provide support to those students who may require greater assistance. Moreover, Math Strategies – Primary exposes students to the benefits of learning mathematics with the use of technology. This software is unique in that it allows teachers to monitor student and class improvement in performance. Each student receives a ranking of low, medium or high, depending on the number of attempts it may take to arrive at the correct answer. Teachers can use this feature to identify which students in their classrooms require additional support

 How does Math Strategies – Primary connect with Differentiated Instruction?
  • Math Strategies – Primary offers support for the implementation of differentiated instruction. With particular reference to "Knowing the Learner – Readiness", as outlined in the Student Success Differentiated Instruction Educator's Package (2010), Math Strategies – Primary allows for differentiation of the following items in response to learner readiness
  • Level of complexity – can be altered based on students' readiness (e.g., readiness for exposure to an alternative strategy or Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction instead of Single-Digit Addition and Subtraction)
  • Degree of independence – adjusted in Math Strategies – Primary with the guidance provided by the animated chipmunk. Students are encouraged to try again and clues are given to the student if the answer is incorrect. The chipmunk will also suggest a review of the principle or strategy after several incorrect attempts.

 How does Math Strategies – Primary connect with the Ontario Curriculum?
  • Math Strategies – Primary has been developed for use by Kindergarten to Grade 3 students and covers two particular strands in The Full-Day Early Learning – Kindergarten Program and The Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8 Mathematics policy document: Number Sense and Numeration, and Patterning (ELK Program)/Patterning and Algebra(Grades 1-8)
