Gathering Valid and Reliable Evidence of Learning
to Determine a Grade Video Library

Accurate evaluation relies on having a body of valid and reliable evidence of student learning. This video library contains resources that show how to gather evidence to determine a grade. The same principles and concepts of validity and reliability apply from kindergarten through grade 12. The resources in this library illustrate teachers implementing those principles and concepts through effective assessment practices in each division. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to see assessment through multiple perspectives by viewing all the videos in this series. Gathering Valid and Reliable Evidence

Video Transcript: (pdf)
This document contains a transcript of all of the video segments in this series.

Segment 1: Teachers and Students as Collaborative Partners in Gathering Evidence (video)
Gathering valid and reliable evidence for assessment of learning both improves student learning and informs teacher professional judgement when determining a grade that reflects students’ achievement.

Segment 2: Valid Evidence from Rich Tasks (video)
Aligning goals, criteria and tasks increases the validity and reliability of the assessment evidence.

Segment 3: Triangulating the Evidence (video)
While teachers attend to the validity of their evidence, the reliability is equally important when judging student performance.

Segment 4: Student Voice in Gathering Evidence (video)
Teachers recognize and embrace their responsibility to develop students as effective, responsible and accountable self-assessors who are empowered and equipped to assess, monitor, and judge their own learning as their teachers would.

Segment 5: Informed Professional Judgement (video)
Teachers and students utilize assessment information, strategies and skills to continuously inform professional judgements and to reliably make decisions about progress and achievement throughout the teaching learning process.

Segment 6: Determining a Grade (video)
Students and teachers discuss and compare a body of evidence to reach a shared understanding of what has been learned and to co-determine their overall achievement.
